2042, post-peak oil America. The FBI and NSA have been merged into a single entity — the Federal Justice Agency — with wide-ranging investigative powers across state borders. Within it, a small core of elite agents, Special Crime Investigators, are brought in on the most difficult, dangerous cases to offer their expertise and abilities.

New SCI Devlin Grace meets his partner, enhanced agent Connor Hutchens, for the first time. Connor is odd and damaged — but with the ability to hear, taste, feel, see and smell well beyond the senses of ordinary people. Together they must solve a dangerous, perplexing case before more children are killed or mutilated - and resist their growing attraction to each other, which could put their careers and their safety in great peril.

Devlin Grace and Connor Hutchens couldn't be anymore different. Devlin is black and street smart and Conner is white and ZERO social skills!

I really enjoyed a romance in this book, really enjoyed how matter of factly multiracial couple is portrayed, how strong and interesting both characters are. Was kind of dissapointed in the mystery, but then I thought about it and while I am still dissapointed in the mystery, I think it mainly served as vehicle to help romance develop and grow. Sci fi settings were interesting too. Devlin and Connor are just awesome IMO.
There is no angst in the story, or I guess I should say almost no angst. Connor has some issues, but how to put it? He is IMO very self aware of them to spend much time angsting about them.

Have I mentioned that Devlin and Connor are incredibly cool characters? ) They actually *grow* throughout the story. I know, it should be a given in any book, but unfortunately it is not, so I am way too excited when I see growth and credible change in the characters. Oh and I think price is good too. Book is quite long.Oh and I want to eat up Devlin on the cover.
I really enjoyed this story line and the characters it featured. It was one of those that you wished for more when you reached the end.
Have not read many gay based mystery novels that take place in the future. It kept my interest even though this furturistic novels are not my ususal genre.
This book was good on so many levels
- As a sci-fi plot set in the future, it was interesting and involving. The characters were interesting and quirky, yet thoroughly involving and loveable.
- As a detective/crime story, also excellent as the main characters have to wade through several crimes and figure them out.
- As a love story, it was excellent. I found myself pulling for them to get together and figure it all out, even through the issues.

Of course, the book leaves us sort of in the middle. I really hope Ann Somerville will continue the story!
Set in a slightly alternative world, where mechanically augmented humans partner with regular humans. Connor is the augmented one, and has a Spock like outer persona, as he sees and hears too much. Underneath his impassive face, however, he is very concerned, especially as his last partner had a breakdown, possibly caused by him.

Devlin is smart, savvy and ambitious and thus willing to partner with Connor. I like how budgetary restraints make them room together (seriously, does the FBI make its same sex agents room together? does any corporation do that? I must be getting old but I don't like the idea of rooming with a coworker at all!) which accelerates their relationship. Both men are cool and sexy.

I read this quickly and enjoyed, but it didn't really linger and I haven't felt compelled to reread it, so it loses a star (I often reread books within a month of purchase, and usually reread most of my favorites 2-3 times a year)
Devlin and Connor were strikingly strong characters. They were both so well drawn, I saw them as clear as day. Knew them. And oh my God, did I root for them over the course of this story. I love opposites-attract stories and this is one of the most satisfying and romantic ones I've read. The way the two intrigued each other from the start, then just headed unstoppably down the path of falling for each other was *so* beautifully done. I believed in their attraction and their love, despite how different they were. I cared about Dev and Connor to the extent that even when they make foolish choices, I felt such empathy, I couldn't be too exasperated. Everything they do is utterly in character, and they're both so charming and likeable. Even Connor's decision at the end, which surprised me at first, was entirely in character for him.

The secondary characters sprang to life as thoroughly, especially Devlin's family and Connor's father. I liked the way Somerville handled Connor's unusual relationship with his dad. It was realistic and increased my sympathy for Connor a thousandfold. It also made me so happy when Dev was there to help Connor deal with things. I loved Dev's protectiveness and the gentle intuitive quality in his personality that helped him understand Connor in a way no one else could. Connor was adorable in his naivety, tempered by a wonderfully strong will. It made them a perfect match for each other.
Devlin Grace and Connor Hutchens couldn't be anymore different. Devlin is black and street smart and Conner is white and ZERO social skills!
